Q: What is the shelf life of your products?
A: 3 years.

Q: Do you use artificial flavours or sweeteners?
No. We do not use any artificial flavours or sweeteners.

Q: Are your products gluten-free, nut-free, and/or organic?
All our raw materials are gluten-free, peanut and nut-free, organic where possible, and sourced from  Canada/North America (with the exception of our whey protein isolate and creatine).

Q: Do your products contain electrolytes?
A: Yes, many of our products contain electrolytes in proportion to how they are lost via sweat (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium).

Q: What kind of protein do you use?
A: Grass Fed New Zealand whey isolate protein sourced from Fonterra (New Zealand dairy company) and a mix of pea protein isolate and canola protein isolate in our DEEPLEAF plant-based blends

Q: Is canola protein isolate safe?
A: There have been some claims that Canola Oil can produce unwanted unhealthy inflammatory responses when exposed to high heat. The process of isolating the canola protein isolate does not involve high heat.  Scientists debunk claims of seed oil health risks.

Q: Why is your whey isolate protein the best?
A: Fonterra allows their cows to roam freely so their stress and hormone levels stay low leaving you with the cleanest whey protein isolate. Imagine what kind of quality you would receive if your whey protein isolate was extracted from cows (milk) that were treated unethically or fed a poor diet or crammed into a small space. Quality matters!

Fonterra extracts the protein from the cow’s milk through an ultrafiltration & ion exchange process which isolates the protein at 94% purity on an as is basis. When the moisture is removed, you are left with a 97.5% pure protein. By definition, whey protein isolate must be > 90% pure protein so as you can see, our products contain a very high quality whey protein isolate. Fun fact: There is only 0.056 grams of lactose left in Fonterra’s whey protein isolate which is insignificant compared to a typical glass of milk which contains 12g. Therefore, if you typically avoid whey protein because you are lactose intolerant, give our whey isolate a try!

Q: Why are there carbs/sugars in your products?
A: Humans have about 2.5hrs of stored glycogen in their muscles & liver but once they run out, the body begins to burn fat for fuel. Fat is not a bad fuel source however the energy required to convert fat to fuel is greater than glycogen (carbs). This process also requires a significant amount of oxygen in comparison to the body using glycogen for fuel. As a result, you want to keep the body fueled on glycogen (carbs/sugar). 

If you can prevent your glycogen stores from depleting completely, it will take the body less effort and time to recover. Fueling properly means providing your body with the appropriate amount of carbs/sugar (fuel glycogen stores), electrolytes (hydration), and protein (muscle synthesis).

Q: Why are there protein AND carbs in your recovery blend?
A: Protein supports muscle rebuilding & carbs replenish depleted glycogen stores.

Q: Why does your protein supplement contain sunflower lecithin?
A: Sunflower lecithin is added to reduce the amount of foaming when the product is mixed. If we did not add this ingredient, the protein would foam up so much that it would be difficult to consume.

Q: Why do you use pea protein isolate and canola protein isolate in your DEEPLEAF plant-based protein products?
A: 
When we created our DEEPLEAF plant-based blends, we were aiming to deliver a product with a protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS) of 1, the same level of a high quality whey protein isolate. A protein with a PDCAAS of 1 must provide per unit of protein 100% or more of the essential amino acids required after digestion - essentially a measure of the quality of the protein. PDCAAS score of 1 is a high protein quality, PDCAAS scores of less than 1 have inferior quality. High quality proteins are important to support optimum skeletal muscle health.

Other than soybeans, single plant-based proteins alone do not deliver PDCAAS's of 1. In order to achieve them requires the blending of different plant based proteins - like we chose to do with a blend of Pea Protein Isolate and Canola Protein Isolate - both exceptional protein sources, but only together can they deliver the desired PDCAAS of 1.

Q: Why do you use plant protein isolates in DEEPLEAF blends?
A: Plant-based isolates deliver the best amino acid levels and protein purity while avoiding the fibrous portions of the plant which result in much better tasting products, while also avoiding the grittiness for which plant-based products are notorious.
